“If you do that you will probably die” was the response I was given when I first said I wanted to compete in a Spartan Beast in Killington. It was a serious gut check I will never forget it.

The next day I woke up and the face in the mirror I didn’t recognize. All throughout school I loved to work out and stay active. From playing sports in high school to lifting weights with my friends in college. However, life got in the way and I had somehow added 40 pounds to my 6’1” frame. It didn’t happen overnight but the realization happened instantly. I knew something had to change. I made a commitment that morning that I wouldn’t just attempt a Spartan Beast, but I would finish.

After 6 months of constant training, I found myself at the starting line of the Spartan World Championships. I had slimmed down from 215 to 175 lbs and was in the best shape I had been to that point. What I thought would be the end of my fitness journey ended up just being the beginning. 4 years and 8 races later, two on one weekend (Beast on Saturday and Sprint on Sunday),  my life has completely changed.

I understand that not everyone wants to run in a Spartan race, for some just getting out of the house is a big first step.
